Murphy Pendleton shot Frank Coleridge. He shot him in his own home after a robbery attempt. After the shot was fired, the cops were called and Murphy ran. He dropped the gun and ran, but the cops ended up catching up with him. He was tased, beaten, and promptly arrested.
Murphy’s time in prison was not a rehabilitative one. Past traumas seemed to boil to the surface and the prison guards were less than kind to the inmates. Murphy has a long history of behavioral problems, often falling into deep depressions and angry highs and he’s proved time and time again to be difficult to deal with.
One day power went out in the cell block that Murphy was in, and a riot began. Murphy, caught in the middle of this riot, was pinned as a bigger threat within the prison after getting into a brutal fight with George Sewell and Anne Cunningham, Murphy’s “favorite” corrections officers. It was decided that Murphy and some other inmates would be transferred to another facility. Murphy and the other inmates were all loaded onto a bus, Anne being tasked with keeping the inmates in line while they were being transported. Anne seemingly has some extra burning hatred set aside for Murphy, which often leaves him bewildered. Her insults always cut deeper than Murphy would initially prepare for.
It was a particularly stormy night during the drive, stuck between rain and snow. The roads on the small mountain were extra slick. A verbal fight broke out on the bus between the inmates, distracting the bus driver. That’s when it all went to shit. The bus slid on the road, the driver overcorrected, and the bus rolled. Murphy can’t recall how many times the bus rolled, but he knows one second he was on the road, and the next he was sprawled out on the bus’ floor, handcuffs broken. The other inmates and officers have seemingly disappeared without a trace.
After exiting the bus, Murphy can see a town looming in the foggy distance. Silent Hill.
